Florida’s New Alimony Reform: A Turning Point in Family Law

Permanent alimony is over in Florida. Here’s what the 2023 reform means for settlement strategy and support duration.
To be frank, Florida just closed a chapter that defined family court for half a century. The 2023 Alimony Reform Bill eliminated permanent alimony — a move that reshapes divorce settlements across the state.
What Changed
For decades, judges could award permanent alimony, guaranteeing lifetime payments. Now, that option is gone. Florida recognizes only four types: temporary, bridge-the-gap, rehabilitative, and durational.
Durational alimony is capped at 50 percent of the marriage’s length — meaning a 20-year marriage can result in at most ten years of support.
The Intent — and the Impact
Proponents say the law modernizes fairness; critics warn it leaves long-term spouses vulnerable. Both are partly right. As a family-law attorney, I see the deeper truth: this reform demands foresight. Negotiating divorce settlements now requires strategy, not just sympathy.
How This Affects You
If you’re considering divorce, your timing and documentation matter. Courts will expect proof of need, ability to pay, and evidence that support aligns with new statutory limits.
At The Law Office of Anthony Jimenez, we prepare cases that balance compassion with precision. We advocate for clients’ futures, not just their settlements.
Final Thought
Alimony reform marks a turning point. But justice, like marriage, depends on commitment — our commitment to understanding the law and protecting the people it serves.
